Add-On/Plug-On Software Functionality

Adding game functionality to a cellular handset is only really useful for people interested
in playing games. This means that for everyone else it is an unnecessary overhead
(in terms of cost and processor/memory bandwidth overhead) being added to
the phone. An alternative is to provide the additional software functionality via a plugon
or add-on or plug-in or add-in component. Plug-on devices are added on top of an
existing product and plug-in devices are added in to an existing product.
The product illustrated is a plug-on mobile phone fascia with an Intel StrongARM
processor that when added to the handset changes or enhances its functions—for example,
ring tones, games, screen savers, and thematic Web links (Web links associated with
particular user group interests). The product illustrated in Figure 6.5 is known as Smart
Skin.
