The CCIE Journey,

Linux

Arguably the wild card of the pack and conceived as a way of reducing
Microsoft’s dominance in PC software, Linux supports open code software, which
means the original source code is made available in the public domain to the
software design community. Anyone can suggest and help implement improvements
in the open source code, resulting in collaborative software development.
This helps to avoid disputes over software intellectual property ownership and
therefore reduces software component cost.
