Automatic Configuration

Most modern modems provide the capability to identify their type and specifications, which a
computer or router can use to assist in the configuration process. Obviously, the benefit of automatic
configuration is that it reduces the number of administrative tasks required during installation;
however, the learning process can delay modem availability and can fail. The delay is the
result of the interrogation process, and failure can occur if the router fails to understand the
responses from the modem. This can happen if the modem is not in the modemcap database,
discussed later in this chapter.
