Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model
As you probably already know, the
Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model
has seven layers,
each of which specifies functions that enable data to be transmitted from host to host on an internetwork.
Figure 12.4 shows the OSI model and the functions of each layer.
The OSI model is the cornerstone for application developers to write and create networked
applications that run on an internetwork. What is important to network engineers and technicians
is the encapsulation of data as it is transmitted on a network.
