Getting Started with the Cisco PIX Firewall

Overview

In this chapter, you will learn about:

  • Basic PIX Firewall configuration

  • ICMP traffic to the firewall

  • Time setting and NTP support

  • Syslog configuration

  • DHCP server configuration

This chapter covers a variety of basic PIX Firewall configuration commands and processes, which are important for you to know if you want to get the most out of a firewall device. The first section reviews and builds on the basic PIX configuration from the preceding chapter. The fourth section includes an exercise demonstrating how to set up and use a simple Syslog server.

Note

Some topics covered refer to or use features that have not been covered yet in detail. In this chapter, you will run into Firewall access control lists in several places. I am including them here for complete coverage on the topic. Due to their similarity to ACLs on routers, I am assuming that you will see what the ACLs are doing. If not, they are covered in detail in the next chapter.
