Using Access Control Lists to Secure the Network

Access control lists (ACLs) are powerful tools that are often at the heart of many other processes, including security processes. ACLs can be a good starting point for adding security and traffic management to a network, but they can’t protect the network by themselves. Devices like firewalls and proxy servers, as well as good security practices—password management, physical security, and solid administrative policies—should be used to augment them.

STUDY TIP

\While ACLs aren’t a specific exam objective, they’re fundamental in many security implementations and processes. Newer operating system (OS) versions for devices like PIX firewall boxes and Catalyst switches use Cisco IOS–like features and commands and, therefore, incorporate access list capabilities. Make sure you’re comfortable with how access lists are constructed and how they work. If you need a refresher on ACLs, go to Appendix A.
