DVMRP and RIP
The RPF technique to prevent multicast routing loops depends on the available IP routing information contained in the router. As stated earlier, the router can use static routes, default routes, or dynamic routing information to build the routing table. A dynamic routing protocol is almost always preferred and DVMRP is no exception. DVMRP utilizes its own dynamic routing protocol for route exchange and routing table construction. The routing protocol used by DVMRP is based on the Routing Information Protocol (RIP), so we will review RIP to gain an understanding of the mechanisms involved and the problems that can occur with a distance vector routing protocol.
