Expanding the Network Standard

The 802.11 standard evolved from the wired IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard
restricted within the physical (PHY) and the medium access control
(MAC) sublayers.
The primary difference between physical and wireless networks is the
basic service set (BSS), which is composed of at least two wireless stations
or nodes (STAs) that have recognized each other and have established
communications between them.
Stations are able to link directly to each other with peer-to-peer (P2P)
sharing for a specific area of wireless coverage through an area that is
usually called an “ad hoc” network or independent basic service set
(IBSS).
