Platform Bias
PC laptops usually run some version of Windows or some flavor of Linux or UNIX to access your WLAN. Hardware solutions like the one described above are usually your best route, rather than relying explicitly on software to create a protective VPN link. Macintosh and PC computers do communicate on the same 802.11b frequency, but Windows and Mac employ different platforms, which means different encryption software. It is far too easy to fall into a trap in which one platform does not have the most up-to-date version of encryption software, or worse yet, having the Mac not equipped with the proper software to access the VPN that your PC can!
The point of vulnerability is at your access point, but a hacker can easily find some way to steal your laptop and determine how to break into the WLAN. If you protect your access point by deploying an effective WLAN firewall, and immediately deactivate the access privileges from a stolen laptop computer by removing its unique MAC address from the access control list of your network, you can at least have the minimum level of protection required to ensure hackers won’t compromise your security and breach your safeguards. 262
