Smart Systems

A good method of keeping unauthorized users out of your network is to

use an access control list (ACL) that screens out all attempts to gain

access to your network by wireless network interface cards that do not

have a preprogrammed, recognized MAC address.

These systems must evolve to the point where the ACL is dynamically

programmed with rules. For example, if there is a spike in network

activity during non-peak hours, the computer can identify this trend as

potential hacking activity. If a mobile computing device is stolen (or

used without the user’s knowledge), how is an administrator supposed

to know to remove the MAC address of that machine from the ACL? The

computer can flag this type of “off-hours” activity as suspicious, so that

you can monitor any incoming connections from this machine and deactivate

it automatically if it attempts to access secured wireless network

resources.
